I'd like to welcome everyone that is reading this to Megan Elizabeth Interiors! This is all very new and exciting for me (and also a bit intimidating if I'm going to be honest).
I'm starting my own Interior Decorating business and it only made sense to create a shiny new blog to go with it.
For the past five years, Interior Design has been my passion, I've known that it was what I wanted to do with my life. Although a lot of Interior Decorators never went to school, I'm still young and I had no idea how or where to get started. Which is why I took an 18 month Interior Decorating course. With the help of that course I can now say that I am one hundred percent ready to pursue my career in this field.
School taught me a lot of things, but more than anything it gave me confidence. A lot of the design aspects of this career I already knew. I had self taught myself so much just by reading books, magazines, and blogs. I didn't fully realize it until I was in school. I think that being an Interior Decorator is a bit like being an artist. You can take art classes your whole life, but that doesn't make you an artist. It comes to a point where you just need to go out there and do your thing.
What school did teach me was the technical aspect of the job. Namely, AutoCAD. I couldn't imagine designing a space without this program.
I was lucky enough to get an incredible internship (or stage, as it's referred to here in Quebec) at the Kravet showroom here in Montreal. It has taught me so much about fabric but even more importantly it gave me insight into the business. I got the opportunity to be able to speak one on one with some of Montreal's top Interior Designers who gave me advice on starting my own business. Needless to say I am immensely grateful.
When it comes to my sense of style, I don't want to toot my own horn too much but I'd like to say that I have a natural knack for knowing what goes together and doesn't. I am not afraid to experiment and mix patterns and styles.
Another aspect of design that I think is really important are the little things. Whether it be the knobs on a dresser or a vintage chandelier in a closet. Those are the finishing touches on a room that instantly make the space more personal.
At this point in time I don't have that much experience working in the field but that's why I'm started this blog. To document my growth as an Interior Decorator.
I plan on blogging about lots of different design oriented things such as; projects that I'll be tackling in my own
I hope that you're just as excited as I am. At this point in time I still haven't gotten my business cards designed and printed (even though I know exactly what I want) and I haven't got a single client. I don't quite know whats in store. What I do know is that it won't be easy and that it's going to be a lot of hard work. But I'm okay with that. It's not really work if you love what you're doing.
